COSHOCTON – Despite the chilly temperatures, a large group of volunteers met at Lake Park on April 8 to begin the process of spring cleaning. Workers started around 9 a.m. and a free lunch was provided by the Friends of the Park at noon.

Lori Everhart, park director, said volunteers were each given a task when they checked in at the director’s office that morning. Spread throughout the park were people of all ages working to make Lake Park into a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature. “We have people spreading mulch, picking up trash and branches, weeding and anything else that needs done to get ready for the summer season.”

Master Gardener Gail Piper was one of the volunteers working at the park. The Master Gardeners club has two large flower beds they monitor all year and she was working on one with several other helpers. Four years ago, these beds were overgrown and nothing but weeds. Today, they are full of carefully arranged plants that are marked with signs to explain to the public what the plant is.

The clean-up day was sponsored by the Friends of the Park. Their annual membership drive has started and anyone interested in supporting the park and all of the activities is encouraged to contact Everhart for an application. There are several levels of membership and members can be as active or inactive as they want. Events are held throughout the year that members can volunteer to help with.  Call the park office at 740-622-7528 if you are interested in more information about becoming a Friend of the Park.
