Yoga With The Scarecrows: Walk Clary Gardens Scarecrow Trail and then relax with yoga taught by Kristin Cheney from Yoga Intent on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 5 to 6 p.m. Great for any skill level and family friendly. Participants are asked to bring bug spray and a yoga mat if they have one. The class will take place near the Children’s Garden. Free and open to the public. A donation of $5 is encouraged. Education of Yesterday: Country Crossroads presents Education of Yesterday’s 15th annual farm show on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20 at 3685 Cass Irish Ridge Rd., Dresden. Halloween Party: The annual Halloween Party, sponsored by the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, will be Saturday, Oct. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Ridgewood Elementary School, 225 W. Union Ave. in the gym. Registration for the costume contest will be from 1 to 1:20 p.m. Judging starts at 1:30 p.m. There will be games for kids including a cake walk. Food will be provided on a first come, first serve basis.

Bluegrass Music: Three Rivers Bluegrass Music and Relay for Life Team Alana presents bluegrass music at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites, 115 N. Water St., on SR 541 beside McDonald’s, once a month. Bad Boyz Mud Bog: The next Bad Boyz Mud Bog of the season, 44840 SR 541, Coshocton, will be Saturday, Oct. 26. Gates open at 10 a.m. Event starts at 1 p.m. General admission is $5. Free admission to those infant to three years old. Vehicle admission is $20. One hundred percent payout to first, second, and third place. Flu Shots: The Coshocton City Health Department, 400 Browns Lane, Coshocton, will have walk-in clinics for flu shots thru the month of October on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. Insurances accepted: Medicare, Medicaid, Humana Medicare, Aetna Medicare, Medigold, The Health Plan (Medicare), Medical Mutual of Ohio, Molina, CareSource and Paramount. Christmas Tree Drive: Leadership Coshocton County will have a Christmas tree drive Oct. 7 through Oct. 31. This will help families who were affected by the flood in West Lafayette last June. Please donate a six-foot tree. Make checks payable to West Lafayette Methodist Church and put Christmas Tree Drive in the memo line. Closed: The Board of Elections will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14 for Columbus Day. No ballots will be issued. Regular business, and voting will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 a.m.

 

OMEGA Meeting: The Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association (OMEGA) is updating the regional long-range transportation plan for Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Muskingum and Tuscarawas counties. OMEGA is currently seeking public input to determine the needs of the region as we work with local officials, the Ohio Department of Transportation and others to improve the region’s transportation system. OMEGA will hold a public meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. at the Coshocton Public Library, 655 Main St. to gather the public’s insight into the community’s transportation needs. Blood Drive: Red Cross Blood Drive will be Oct. 16, 3 to 8 p.m. at the Chili Crossroads Bible Church, 29445 County Road 10 Fresno. Free small pizza for every donor. New donors welcome. Utilities Office: The Coshocton Utilities Office will be closing at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 for office training. They will reopen for normal business hours the following day.

 

Produce Market: The Kiwanis Club will sponsor a free quarterly produce market on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the agriculture building at the county fairgrounds.  Fresh produce supplied by Mid-Ohio Food Bank will be available at no cost to residents on a first come, first served basis.  Although no one will be turned away, the program is designed for low income individuals and families. Participants are asked to bring photo ID and boxes or bags for their produce. This is the last produce market in 2019 sponsored by Kiwanis. 2020 dates will be coming soon.

 

Mental Health First Aid: Classes for adults who work with youth will be offered through the OSU Extension on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Warsaw Elementary, 501 Blissfield Rd., Warsaw from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free and snacks are provided. Bring your own lunch. Register by calling the OSU Extension Office at 740-622-2265. Class fee is waived due to a grant allowing this program to be brought to Coshocton County OSU Extension.

 

Flushing Hydrants: The Village of West Lafayette will start flushing hydrants on the north side of town on Monday, Oct. 21 starting at Water Street and working down Fairview Street and North George Street.

Free Seminar: How dyslexia affected our daughter. She struggled with reading, spelling, right/left, tying her shoes, keeping her room clean, and telling time with a hand clock. She didn’t like going to school. Now she is a thriving college student who loves to read. What happened to make such a difference? Auditions: Auditions for the 30th season of the Coshocton Singers have been set for Oct. 21, 22 and 24 at The Presbyterian Church, 142 North Fourth St., Coshocton. Students in grades 4 – 8 are invited to audition. The Coshocton Singers rehearse Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church and sings as part of the Community Choir’s Christmas and spring concerts. Kids Sale: Coshocton County Kids Stuff Sale is a gently-used children’s resale open to the community. Anyone can sell their unused items and shop for new ones. Board Meeting: Coshocton Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) will have their next board meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the CMHA Learning Center, 823 Magnolia St., Coshocton. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss regular business.

Free Family Law Clinic: There will be a free family law clinic for Coshocton County throughout the year. This advice clinic is for low-income individuals. Sign in is at 1:45 p.m. the day of the clinic and is limited to 16 qualified individuals. It will be held at the Coshocton County Juvenile Court, 426 Main St., Coshocton. Poll Workers Needed: The Board of Elections needs poll workers for the Tuesday, Nov. 5 general election. Poll workers will be trained prior to the election and will be paid for training and working Election Day. Toy Chest: Coshocton Co. Firefighters Toy Chest will be taking applications on Nov. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. and Nov. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Coshocton County Services Building, South 7th St., Coshocton, room 145 for low income families in Coshocton County needing help with Christmas toys this year ages newborn to 15 years old.

Shopping Spree Tickets: The Fatherhood Initiative has tickets available for a 90-second shopping spree at Buehler’s. Tickets are $5 and are available from any Coshocton County Fatherhood Initiative member. Drawing will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, and the shopping spree will be held that week. A limited number of tickets are available. Proceeds benefit father and family-friendly events in the community.

Meeting Change: The River View Board of Education has changed their upcoming October board meeting. The October meeting will now be Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. This meeting will be held in the administrative building.

 

Board Meeting: Coshocton County JVSD will have their next board meeting in the Board of Education Conference Room, 23640 Airport Rd., on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 a.m.

 

Board of Education: The Coshocton City Board of Education will meet in regular session on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Coshocton Elementary School Library. Upon request to the central office, the district shall make reasonable accommodation for a disabled person to be able to participate in this activity.

 

College Fair Night: The 2019 Coshocton Kiwanis Club/Coshocton CARES Career and College Fair Night will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Coshocton County Career Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nearly 60 colleges, universities, technical schools, trade schools and military recruiters will be available to answer questions and distribute information about their programs. Any student or parent is welcome to attend this exciting event. Admission is free.

Church Bicentennial: Dresden Madison Presbyterian Church will celebrate its bicentennial on Oct. 20. Regular worship services will be at 10:15 a.m. There will be a catered dinner at noon. The afternoon program beginning at 1 p.m. will feature Alice Hoover who will present a first-person portrayal of Ruth Shelder, wife of circuit rider Rev. Henry O. Faith, Fun, Fellowship: Isleta United Methodist Church, 58608 CR 9, Newcomerstown, will have a Faith, Fun, Fellowship event on Saturday, Oct. 26. This is a women’s only event. The event is free and there will be speakers, music, and prayer. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the program will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

 

Trunk or Treat: On Sunday, Oct. 27, the Roscoe United Methodist Church is sponsoring “Trunk or Treat”. The event will start at 4 p.m. Children and adults are invited to attend. 155th Anniversary: Conesville United Methodist Church will be celebrating their 155th year as a congregation Sunday, Oct. 27 beginning with worship at 11 a.m. Former Pastor Phil Hoverstock will be preaching for the service. Other former pastors will be participating in the service as well. Following worship, a covered dish dinner will be in the fellowship hall. The church will provide meat dishes, rolls, beverages and celebration cake for dessert. Individuals attending are invited to bring vegetable (hot or cold) or fruit dishes. Holiday Bazaars

 

Grace United Methodist Church: The United Methodist Women of Grace UMC, 422 Walnut St., will have their annual holiday bazaar on Friday, Nov. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Homemade baked goods, candy, canned food, as well as a lot of crafts, used books, and puzzles. Lunch will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Includes homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, and homemade pies and cakes. Carry-out will be available.

 

Emmanuel Lutheran Church: Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1500 Pleasant Valley Dr., will have their annual “Holiday Bazaar” on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured items will be our own homemade noodles, and our own angel food cakes. They have a lunchroom with soups, sandwiches and desserts. They also have a Pick-a-Cookie table where you can choose the cookies that you would like to purchase by the dozen. There will be baked goods, crafts, and a white elephant table.

Clubs and Organizations

 

Artist Collective Meeting: The monthly meeting of the Coshocton County Artists Collective is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Frame Shop, 1030 Chestnut Street. Arrangements for Apple Butter display and November Art as a Gift display will be discussed. Interested individuals, at all skill levels, and all mediums are welcome.

 

Cake Auction: Business and Professional Women (BPW) will be having a cake auction on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Frontier Power Community Room. The theme this year is “Scary, Creepy, Halloween Cakes”. Cakes can be dropped off Friday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cake viewing will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. BPW Meeting: Coshocton Business and Professional Women (BPW) will surprise a member as the 2019 Woman of the Year on Monday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. at Grace UMC. The public is invited to attend. They will discuss their recent sixth annual writers’ workshop and review the evaluation and comments received. November’s writing prompt will be: Veteran’s Day.

Breakfast Buffet: Army Navy has a breakfast buffet every third Saturday of the month. Veterans and first responders eat for free. Children 12 and under eat for free. Adults, $5.

 

Vietnam Veterans: The Vietnam Veterans meet the second Saturday of each month at the American Legion at 9 a.m. If you are a Vietnam Veteran who served during the Vietnam War, whether you served in country or not, you are welcome to attend.

Al-Anon: Coshocton Al-Anon Family Group meetings are at Central Christian Church located at the corner of 8th and Main Streets, Coshocton from 7 – 8 p.m. every Tuesday.

 

Volunteers Needed: The Newcomerstown Historical Society is seeking new members and volunteers to act as tour guides and to help out on other tasks at the Olde Main Street Museum and Temperance Tavern. All volunteers will train for the task you choose. If you are retired or just have extra time a few hours each month, please contact Marianne at 740-498-5636.  Membership in the organization is $10 per year.

 

Dance and Country Western Couples Classes: Second and fourth Wednesday of the month, beginning line dancing – 5:30 p.m.; couples class – 6:30 p.m. Cost is $5 each. Books Galore Book Store, Coshocton Public Library: Basement, Mondays, 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: CLOSED: Monday, Oct. 21 (Staff In-Service Day): Gently used books, DVDs, videos, and magazines for sale at rock bottom prices. The bookstore is located in the basement of the Coshocton Public Library and operated by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds benefit the library, the West Lafayette Branch, and the bookmobile. Chi Class, Roscoe United Methodist Church: Gym, Thursdays, year-round, 10 to 11 a.m.: Join the Coshocton Public Library at the Roscoe United Methodist Church Gym to practice gentle exercises that reduce stress and increase vitality. Chi Class is taught by Holli Rainwater, a Certified Tai Chi Easy Practice Leader. Registration is not required.

 

Digital Research 101, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Research has evolved to include both print and digital resources. Join us for an in-depth look at digital databases designed to enhance your research academic, scholarly, or otherwise. Learn what makes a digital database reputable, review valuable tips for more effective and efficient searches, and collaborate with others to share resources. Laptop computers will be made available to participants, but participants are encouraged to bring their own devices. This program is a Community Partnership Program. Plugged and Unplugged, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays, Oct. 16, 23, 30, 2:30 to 5 p.m.: Games, snacks, friends, and fun! Teens, grades 7 through 12, are invited to gather at the library for video games, internet access, board games, crafting, or just to hangout. This free weekly event is partially sponsored by Friends of the Library. Registration is not required.

 

Lapsit, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays, Oct. 16, 23, 30, 10 to 10:30 a.m., Thursdays, Oct. 17, 24, 31, 10 to 10:30 a.m., West Lafayette Branch Library, Tuesdays, Oct. 22, 29, 10 to 10:30 a.m.: For babies and toddlers, birth to three years, Lapsit is focused on early literacy and socialization skills through rhyme, rhythm, fingerplays, and music, all from the security of the lap of a parent or caregiver. We spend 20 minutes on a structured circletime, read the shortest of stories, and then enjoy parachute play, art projects, musical instruments, bubbles, or other fun activities. Registration is not required.

 

Letterland, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays, Oct. 16, 23, 30, 11 to 11:30 a.m., West Lafayette Branch Library, Tuesdays, Oct. 22, 29, 11 to 11:30 a.m.: Join us each week for our Preschool Storytime as we travel to a place called Letterland. We will meet engaging letter characters, read theme-related stories and sing songs, learn rhymes, do arts and crafts, and many other fun activities. Preschool Storytime also helps children develop many social skills, such as self-regulation and peer interaction. This event is for children ages 3-6. Registration is not required.

 

Just for Fun Fall Book Club, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Thursday, Oct. 17, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Kids aged 7 to 12 are invited to join us for a special autumn book club. We will meet once a month in September, October, and November to discuss three great novels. Books will be available to borrow from the library four weeks before each session. Pumpkin Palooza, West Lafayette Branch Library, Thursday, Oct. 17, 5 to 6 p.m.: In place of Teen Night at the Branch this month, we will be having a special event open to anyone aged 9 through 18 years. After learning about the Zentangle Method (easy-to-learn, structured patterns), we will create Zentangle Pumpkins, ideal for holiday decor. Batty for Bats, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 6 to 7 p.m.: Bats get a bad rap, but the Ohio Nature Education will help to dispel this reputation.  They will bring us an activity-based program that includes interesting facts and tells us why bats are beneficial. Ohio Nature Education provides a permanent home for injured animals that can no longer live in the wild. They will bring with them live bats as well as their predators, owls and snakes. This event is open to all ages. No registration is required.

 

Glow Party, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Saturday, Oct. 26, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: For a glowing good time, come dressed in a costume or in your party best! We will be movin’ and groovin’ to the best of kids’ tunes. LOTS of glow-in-the-dark fun! Refreshments will be served. This event is for children ages 3 to 12. No registration is required.

 

Public Technology Education, Coshocton Public Library, Mondays, Oct. 28, 2 to 4 p.m., by appointment;

LIBRARY CLOSED: Monday, Oct. 21 (Staff In-Service Day): Individual assistance is available for those needing help with an app or software, or who want to learn more about digital services the library offers. Crafternoon: Sugar Skulls, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Monday, Oct. 28, 3 to 5 p.m.: Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with our sugar skull craft activity! These folk art skulls are used during Día de los Muertos in celebration of the departed. Come join the fun and decorate sugar skulls with us! This event is for children and teens in grades 5 to 12.
