Local Bounty Update

| January 26, 2016

It’s a great day to enjoy shopping at Local Bounty. Ben Young suggests, get the grill out and celebrate the break in the weather with steak from Local Bounty.

A Message from Our Manager

Thanks to all our shoppers! Your support of local food is valued tremendously!

In the race for good taste and healthy eating, slow foods win every time. What do we mean by slow food?

Here’s my definition:

Food that is produced or prepared in accordance with local culinary traditions, typically using quality local source ingredients.

Stay warm!

Vendor updates

Flying Pig Farm

We’ve heard your suggestions and now offer our bread sliced! You’ll have to make do with my freehand this week, but we have a slicing guide ordered so we can make more uniform cuts. I will have non-GMO bread midweek…I need to get more flour today. 🙂 We also have some Texas Sheet Cake for all you Chocoholics. Our 6″ pies are selling well and remember we’ll make full size for any occasion. Just let Kristi know or email us at [email protected]. Thanks for all your support!

Keene Creek Farm

What a whirlwind the past two weeks have been for us. Topping the list is the arrival of our newest family member, Lane Rowdi. He came three weeks early, weighing in at 5 lbs 15 oz, but most importantly healthy. Thankfully, I was immediately relieved of my hyperemesis as soon as Lane was born. I have so missed not being able to be as active in our farm and marketing efforts as I was pre-pregnancy. But, I’ll be getting back into the swing of things starting with this update. We are also expecting the arrival of two litters of piglets (due within the next week to ten days if our math is correct). Rowdi has been busy making sure that there is ample heat/insulation up in the barn for this arrival of winter babies. Unfortunately our supply of pork cuts at the market this week is dwindling. Ham loaf is out of stock and we won’t have any until mid-March. We thought we had enough stock-piled, but that’s not the case. We still have a good selection of other cuts though – mild Italian brats, fresh bratwurst (so, so good cooked up in soup), breakfast blend bulk sausage, roasts and more. We *may* have some more Canadian bacon and peppered bacon out in our warehousing freezer (I’ll have to do some digging). If we do, we will deliver what we have left to Local Bounty in the morning before opening. Thanks to all of our customers for your kindness and understanding while our family coped with my pregnancy/illness over the past several months. While we’ve been out of regular communication lately, work around the farm hasn’t slacked off. 🙂 We have piggies growing (will be ready to butcher at the end of February) and have two more rounds of litters on the way in the weeks/months to come.

Mullet Apiaries

Mullet Apiaries – Are you interested in beekeeping? Think you might want to try it? The best way to find out is to take a course or attend a workshop. The Coshocton County Beekeepers Association is holding their annual Beginning Beekeepers class on February 20, 2016 at the Frontier Power Community Room from 9 am –4 pm. Cost is $50 which includes lunch and the book. No obligation to get a hive, but a great way to get familiar with the basics, interact with other beekeepers, and get your questions answered. Call Dick at 740-824-3915 to register, pick up a pamphlet at Local Bounty or go to http://www.coshoctonbeekeepers.com/ and scroll to the bottom of the page.  In the meanwhile, try some of our Cinnamon Creamed Honey mixed with a little butter from the Local Bounty and spread on your favorite classic or multigrain pancakes. Yum! We appreciate all our Local Bounty customers – thank you.

Young Farms

Young Farms still has hamburger in bulk packages, patties, a roast or two, and plenty of steaks! Come get some grill items to enjoy the short warm up we are getting this week!

Bob’s Pickle Patch  (Verda’s Hens)

Free range or pastured?  It makes no difference to the hens when there is snow on the ground.  They all hate to get their feet in it.  They spend a lot of time in the house just listening to country music and snacking on corn and sunflower seeds..  But with warmer weather, they will come out and start farming for bugs and clover again.

We will bring in about 6 dozen eggs on Thursday this week.
