Auditions to be held for Sweeney Todd

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton Footlight Players are pleased to announce upcoming auditions for the musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” at the Triple Locks Theater Jan. 6, 20 and 21.

Jan. 6 at 2 p.m., only actors ages 12 through adult auditioning for the role of Toby will be seen. Toby is a poor youngster, apprenticed to the flamboyant barber Pirelli, who finds a surrogate family with Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett. The director is seeking a male, or possibly female, who looks age 12 to 18, with a vocal range from Ab4 to Bb2. The role requires focus and skill to handle a difficult role, challenging music and mature subject matter. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents must understand that the musical has mature subject matter.

Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m., open auditions will be held for all adult principle and chorus roles, including Sweeney Todd (Baritone); Mrs. Lovett (Mezzo-Soprano); Anthony Hope (Tenor); Johanna (Soprano); Toby (Tenor); Judge Turpin (Baritone); The Beadle (Tenor); Beggar Woman (Soprano); and Adolfo Pirelli (Tenor).

Those interested in auditioning are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the music by the original Broadway cast via YouTube and other sources. Auditionees will learn and sing a minute or less of a song from the show appropriate to their chosen character or vocal range at the audition.

Full of dark comedy, romance and sweeping musical passages, this opera-esque musical is one of composer Stephen Sondheim’s greatest works. The story chronicles the struggle of a barber hoping to exact revenge on those who’ve wronged him.

The Triple Locks Theater is located at 685 N. Whitewoman St. Coshocton. “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is directed by Samantha Servais. Production dates are May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. and May 12 at 2 p.m. Rehearsals begin Feb. 4. Jackie Mishler is producer.
