COSHOCTON – Roscoe’s Saturday, July 22 member day celebration will include a special event celebrating local talent and the village’s history.

The Canal Era Art Contest will feature work of local artists that depict Roscoe’s past or present.

“We are expecting 20 pieces for the contest and definitely want to continue this next year,” said Lynda Daniel, Roscoe’s marketing manager. “We’ve told the artists that and they are really excited so I think it’s going to be even bigger next year.”

There are two age groups for the art contest, 17 and under and 18 and up. Those who attend the member day celebration will vote for winners in both categories while viewing the pieces in the visitor center’s Lock Landing.

First place receives a cash prize and second a one year family membership to the village. The art pieces will stay up on Sunday, July 23 for the general public to view. The winners will then be on display in the visitor center’s Founder’s Gallery through Sunday, Oct. 22.

“We wanted to do this because we want people to know we are part of the community and not just a tourist attraction,” Daniel said.

Entries for the Canal Era Art Contest are being accepted through Friday, July 21. The pieces already submitted feature a variety of art mediums such as photography, painting, drawing and even one picture created out of material.

“I have a new favorite every time we get a new piece,” said Mariah Ellenwood, special events coordinator for Roscoe. “It’s interesting to see the artists’ different perspectives.”

Some of the pieces entered in the contest will be for sale and Daniel said next year they hope to add a silent auction to the event.

Also helping with the art contest is Shara Prindle from The Frame Shop.

“This helps promote Roscoe and artists in our community,” she said. “I’m impressed with what’s been submitted. They are all different styles and interpretations of Roscoe Village scenes. I think people need to know that artists are still here in Coshocton. There is lots of talent here. It’s just the matter of getting artists and their work out there for people to see.”
