Local Events

Military and First Responders Appreciation Day: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, AMVETS Post 36 parking lot, 986 Otsego Ave. There will be live entertainment, silent auction items, 50/50 raffle and food and drinks by the AMVETS. Several different organizations will have vehicles on display and there will be a silent auction for a 2006 GMC 4×4 1500 truck. Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward the purchase of a new DAV van used to transport county veterans to their VA medical appointments.

 

Flat Broke Run: The third annual Flat Broke Run for Kids will be Sept. 14 at the Army Navy, 628 Walnut St., Coshocton. There will be a veterans’ benefit breakfast at 9 a.m. Registration will be at 10 a.m. All vehicles welcome. First bike out at 11 a.m. Last bike out at 1 p.m. Last bike in at 6 p.m. Silent auction, tattoo contest, door prizes, raffles, and live music. $20 per rider, $30 per couple. Car Show: Newcomerstown Rotary will have a Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show at Newcomerstown High School, 659 Beaver St. on Sunday, Sept. 15, rain or shine. The show will be judged. Bad Boyz Mud Bog: The next Bad Boyz Mud Bog of the season, 44840 SR 541, Coshocton, will be Saturday, Sept. 28. Gates open at 10 a.m. Event starts at 1 p.m. General admission is $5. Free admission to those infant to three years old. Vehicle admission is $20. One hundred percent payout to first, second, and third place. Bluegrass Music: Three Rivers Bluegrass Music and Relay for Life Team Alana presents bluegrass music at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites, 115 N. Water St., on SR 541 beside McDonald’s, once a month. Education of Yesterday: Country Crossroads presents Education of Yesterday’s 15th annual farm show on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20 at 3685 Cass Irish Ridge Rd., Dresden. Free Family Law Clinic: There will be a free family law clinic for Coshocton County throughout the year. This advice clinic is for low-income individuals. Sign in is at 1:45 p.m. the day of the clinic and is limited to 16 qualified individuals. It will be held at the Coshocton County Juvenile Court, 426 Main St., Coshocton. Open House: The Hope Clinic of Coshocton will have an open house to celebrate their 10 years of serving the community on Saturday, Sept. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments and take a tour of the facility. The Hope Clinic is located at 131 S. Sixth St.

Standing Oaks: Standing Oaks Family Benefit at Coshocton Christian Tabernacle will be Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. This benefit is being sponsored by The Homeless Coalition of Coshocton.

 

Bowling Benefit: Legacy Lanes and Lounge will have a Step on the Lane – Strike Out Violence on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two-hour time limit, four-person team, minimum sponsorship, $300 per team. Sponsor includes two games, shoes, t-shirt, and pizza. All proceeds to benefit the First Step Family Violence Intervention Services.

Homecoming: Dutch Run Trinity Church of Christ will be having its 176th homecoming on Sunday, Sept. 8 during their morning service at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served at noon and an afternoon program will begin at 1:30 p.m.

 

Homecoming: Chalfant Church’s annual homecoming is on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. with a carry-in dinner. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Rev. Randy Mullins will speak. A time of reminiscing will present an opportunity to recall past events in the history of Coshocton County’s first established church.

 

Rural Life Sunday: Fresno United Methodist Church, 54233 TR 172, Fresno, will have a Rural Life Sunday on Sunday, Sept. 8. Drive your tractor to church. Outdoor worship in Fresno Park at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dan Eggan, followed by a covered dish and children’s pedal tractor pull. Hayride and parade of tractors and farm equipment to follow. Other activities include horseshoes, corn hole toss, watermelon eating contest, cake walks, and a petting zoo. Refreshments include ice cream, popcorn, and popsicles.

Summer Writing Contest: Write-On Writers Guild is sponsoring a Summer Writing Contest. Choose your own topic, 500-word entries, deadline is Friday, Sept. 6. Write-On Writers: Coshocton’s Write-On Writers Guild will meet Monday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in the library’s small meeting room, 655 Main St., Coshocton. They welcome anyone who is interested in writing poetry, short stories, novels, letters and essays. Their writing prompt will be “Apples/Recipes.”

Lease an American Flag: The Village of West Lafayette will offer a lease of an American flag from the West Lafayette Rotary and the West Lafayette Lions Club for $25. A 3×5 foot flag on a 10 foot staff will be placed in a plastic anchor pipe buried in your front yard. Flags will be displayed on patriotic holidays. CoshoctonOhioRocks: The Facebook group, #CoshoctonOhioRocks meets on Saturdays at the community center on Browns Lane from 1 – 2:30 p.m. for rock painting and posting rocks for people who do not have or use social media.

Volunteers Needed: The Newcomerstown Historical Society is seeking new members and volunteers to act as tour guides and to help out on other tasks at the Olde Main Street Museum and Temperance Tavern. All volunteers will train for the task you choose. Art: The West Lafayette Library is featuring the art of Jim Huff during the month of September. Huff is sharing his landscapes and abstract art done in oils. Library hours are Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from Noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

Elevator: The elevator at the Coshocton Public Library is temporarily out of service.

 

Books Galore Book Store, Coshocton Public Library: Basement, Mondays 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Closed: Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day): Gently used books, DVDs, videos, and magazines for sale at rock bottom prices. The bookstore is located in the basement of the Coshocton Public Library and operated by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds benefit the library, the West Lafayette Branch, and the bookmobile. Senior Center Book Club, Coshocton Senior Center, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1 to 2 p.m.: Join the Coshocton Public Library at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Browns Lane, for a book discussion led by Holli Rainwater. Chi Class, Roscoe United Methodist Church: Gym, Thursdays, year-round, 10 to 11 a.m.: Join the Coshocton Public Library at the Roscoe United Methodist Church Gym to practice gentle exercises that reduce stress and increase vitality. Chi Class is taught by Holli Rainwater, a Certified Tai Chi Easy Practice Leader. Registration is not required.

 

Coffee Club, Presbyterian Church parlor, 142 N. Fourth St., Coshocton, Monday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. to noon: Senior adults 55 and older are invited to join us for a hot cup of coffee and enlightening conversation. We explore a different topic each month: Armchair travel, history, biography, art, literature, popular culture, and more. The September topic is The Roots of Bluegrass Music. Public Technology Education, Coshocton Public Library, Mondays, 2 to 4 p.m., by appointment, Library closed Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day: Individual assistance is available for those needing help with an app or software, or who want to learn more about digital services the library offers. Monday Book Talk, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Monday, Sept. 9, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Monday Book Talk is open to all adults who like to read. The September book is “Once Upon a River” by Diane Setterfield. Registration is not required.

 

Lapsit, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays starting Sept. 11, 10 to 10:30 a.m., Thursdays starting Sept. 12, 10 to 10:30 a.m., West Lafayette Branch Library, Tuesdays starting Sept. 10, 10 to 10:30 a.m.: For babies and toddlers, birth to three years, Lapsit is focused on early literacy and socialization skills through rhyme, rhythm, fingerplays, and music, all from the security of the lap of a parent or caregiver. We spend 20 minutes on a structured circle time, read the shortest of stories, and then enjoy parachute play, art projects, musical instruments, bubbles, or other fun activities. Registration is not required.

 

Letterland, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays starting Sept. 11, 11 to 11:30 a.m., West Lafayette Branch Library, Tuesdays starting Sept. 10, 11 to 11:30 a.m.: Join us each week for our preschool storytime as we travel to a place called Letterland. We will meet engaging letter characters, read theme-related stories and sing songs, learn rhymes, do arts and crafts, and many other fun activities. Preschool storytime also helps children develop many social skills, such as self-regulation and peer interaction. This event is for children ages three to six. Registration is not required.

Family Night at the Library – School-Agers, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Tuesdays starting Sept. 10, 6:45 to 7:15 p.m.: Children ages 7 to 12 are invited to join us each week for STEAM Club (science/ technology/ engineering/ arts/ math). We will experiment with science and engineering, work on coding and have fun with different art media! For a full list of activities, pick up our STEAM bookmark. Registration is not required.

 

Friends of the Library Monthly Meeting, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesday, Sept. 11, Noon to 1 p.m.: All members of the FOL are welcome to join us at the monthly meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at noon. We discuss bookstore business, volunteer opportunities, and the many ways we can help the library. We are always happy to have new members with fresh ideas! Registration is not required.

 

Family Quilts: An Evening for Grandparents and Grandchildren, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Monday, Sept. 16, 6 to 7:30 p.m.: Making quilts is one way that families express their creativity, preserve their history, and show their love for one another. Join us for a fun evening crafting a family quilt that celebrates the GRAND relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. But don’t worry. No sewing is required because these quilts will be made of paper, paint, markers, and other fun art supplies. All materials will be provided. Registration is required. Just for Fun Fall Book Club, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Thursday, Sept. 19, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Kids aged 7 to 12 are invited to join us for a special autumn book club. We will meet once a month in September, October, and November to discuss three great novels. Books will be available to borrow from the library four weeks before each session.
