Coshocton Hospital Begins Hospitalist Program with New Director

| May 9, 2013

Gary J Carver MDCOSHOCTON – When Gary J. Carver, MD, accepts his new role as Director of Hospitalist Medicine for Coshocton Hospital in July, he will realize another goal in his career as an internal medicine physician: to direct a specialized team of physicians dedicated solely to inpatient care. As the program director, Dr. Carver will be responsible for the management of the hospitalist function at Coshocton Hospital, including setting quality-of-care standards for the inpatient program. In addition to being the director, Dr. Carver will also be working as a hospitalist physician.

Hospitalist medicine specializes in providing inpatient care when an illness or injury warrants a stay in the hospital. Hospitalists are trained to manage the clinical conditions of the acutely ill, and provide comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. The hospitalist assumes the care of the patient while keeping the patient’s primary care physician informed of progress, procedures and medications. Following a national trend, Coshocton Hospital will have a hospitalist doctor on site 24-hours-a-day.

Patients return to their primary care physicians for follow-up care after being discharged from the hospital. With a hospitalist program in place, primary care physicians can dedicate their time to seeing patients in the office for non-acute care and health management. “This new program, I feel, will be of great benefit to the patients at Coshocton Hospital,” said Dr. Carver. “Nothing replaces being at the patient’s bedside to evaluate his or her condition. This is an ideal opportunity for me to help the community I love and the patients I’ve come to know over the years.”

“A hospitalist program assigns inpatient care to physicians who are specifically trained to serve patients in an acute care setting with the skills needed to diagnose and treat conditions that can vary in scope and severity,” said Robert D. Miller, Coshocton Hospital CEO. “Dr. Carver’s dedication to quality patient care makes him well suited to this role of defining, coordinating and managing this essential component of health care in our hospital.”

Dr. Carver grew up in Cleveland, where he attended Gilmour Academy. He graduated Cum Laude from Oral Roberts University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo and served his internship and residency at Akron General Medical Center. Dr. Carver is Board Certified in internal medicine and geriatrics. He is also certified in reading EKGs and echocardiograms.

At Coshocton Hospital, Dr. Carver has previously served as chief of staff and on the hospital board of trustees. He is a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, where he is a Sunday school teacher. Dr. Carver is married to Coshocton pediatrician Susan Magness-Carver, MD.

As Dr. Carver assumes his new role as hospitalist director, he will continue to work at his office on a part time basis. Kim Waterfall, MD, who has been with the practice part time for several years, will now be working full time. Additional physicians may be joining the office staff as the need arises. This will ensure the continuity of care for Dr. Carver’s patients at his office.
