Gene Roger Everhart
Gene Roger Everhart, 81, Newcomerstown, passed away late Tuesday night, February 19, in the Barberton Hospital, Summit County, a division of the Summa Health System, following a short illness.
Gene was born in Akron, Ohio on December 8, 1931, and was preceded in death by his parents, George C. Everhart, Newcomerstown, who died in 1984, and Mildred B. Neiferd Everhart, Newcomerstown, who died in 1953.
He was a member of the Newcomerstown High School, class of 1951. Following high school, Gene enlisted in the Air Force and served 20 years, 1951 until 1971. He was a sheet metal technical sergeant and had two tours of duty in France and in Japan. He also was stationed in the Philippines, Vietnam, Youngstown, Texas, Massachusetts, and Arizona, where he retired in 1971. He served during both the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
When Gene returned to civilian life, he became a technician in the heating and air conditioning business. He was employed at Henry Heating and Superior Heating, both in New Philadelphia. He then started his own business, Adelphia Heating & Cooling, where he was employed for many years until he sold the business in 1992.
Gene enjoyed bowling in the leagues at Cy Young Lanes, Newcomerstown, and was a member of the men’s traveling league. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. Gene also enjoyed competitive hand gun shooting competition. While he was in the Air Force, he was a member of the pistol team. He was also a member of the Thomas Montgomery Post # 431, Newcomerstown American Legion, and was an endowment member of the National Rifle Association.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel W. Everhart, Maumee (Toledo), and Edwin Everhart, Akron.
Gene is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn J. Porter Everhart, Newcomerstown, whom he married on June 6, 1955. Gene also leaves four daughters: Cheryl L. Everhart and her companion, Jerry Williams, Daytona Beach, Florida, Pamela S. and husband Randy Lawton, Newcomerstown, Victoria A. and husband Rick Burdick, Maricopa, Arizona, and Carolyn J. and husband Scott Smart, Bolivar. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two brothers, James O. and wife Kathryn (Brown) Everhart, Newcomerstown, George O. and wife Kathy Sue (Robinson) Everhart, Walhonding, two sisters, Joan and husband James Foraker, Port Washington, and Kathy Mizer, New Philadelphia, a sister-in-law, Jo Anne Everhart, Maumee, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Sunday, February 24, 4:00 PM, in the Ourant Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Silverthorne will conduct the services. Graveside services, military services, and burial will be held on Monday, February 25, 12:30 PM, at the Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. The Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard will assist the National Cemetery honor guard with the military services. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until the 4:00 PM funeral.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Gene’s name to the Summa Hospice Foundation, 444 North Main St., Akron 44310. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
