Larry Robert “L. R.” Burkey

Larry Robert “L. R.” Burkey, 81, died Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Sycamore Run Nursing Home in Millersburg following a battle with cancer.

He was born June 3, 1939 in Millersburg the only child of the late John Wilford and Eva G. (Esterline) Burkey.

Larry was an excellent painter working in various body shops throughout his life, owning his own shops on different occasions. He loved music and played in local bands in his early years. He could play most any instrument, guitar, banjo, & fiddle especially well.  Larry was an avid gardener and at his peak having three large gardens in one year. He enjoyed canning and cold packing fruits, vegetables, & meats. He loved cooking and was a great cook from hams and stews to pinto beans. He enjoyed a simple life, spending hours reading and highlighting his Bible. Of all his life’s accomplishments he would want you to know that accepting Jesus Christ as his Saviour was his best decision ever.

He is survived by his children, Robert D. (Chris) Burkey of Killbuck, Larry William (Penny) Burkey of Shreve, Shirley Ann (Dale) Duncan of Brinkhaven, and John Wade Burkey of Killbuck. Grandchildren, Bobbie Burkey, Brian Burkey, Joseph (Sherry) Duncan, & Jamison Burkey. Great grandchildren, Preston & Peyton Burkey. 2 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his former wife, Betty, close friend & companion, Sue, step grandson, Billy, and his long time terrier companion, Sadie Sue.

At Larry’s request there will be a private graveside service at the Tiverton Baptist Church Cemetery with his son-in-law, Dale Duncan officiating.   A time of food and fellowship for family and friends will follow the service.

Larry and his family wish to thank the nurses & staff of Lifecare Hospice for their excellent care, especially his nurse Brandi, and the aids of Sycamore Run Nursing Home for their loving dedicated care of him during his illness.
