Local Bounty Update

| May 16, 2013

local bountyCOSHOCTON – Local Bounty Shoppers – What a week! From frosty mornings to afternoons in the 80s, we’ve been on a weather roller coaster.

Here are a few updates from some of our vendors:

Circle the Sun Farm

Helen Sites has lots of cold weather crops this week including a couple varieties of kale. She may have more asparagus and spinach as well.

Keene Creek Farm

We have lots of news/changes to share with you this week so here we go. Firstly we’ll have new pork products available Friday afternoon including hot dogs (MSG-free) and garlic-butter, marinated boneless pork chops. Customers have asked us for an MSG-free breakfast blend sausage, so we’ll have that available this Friday afternoon as well (in bulk and 1/4 lb patties). Our selection of brats has expanded as well with the addition of a Cajun brat (for those of you who like spicy, this one’s for you). In the large white cooler you’ll find a few bags of gourmet salad greens, cilantro, chives and our cage-free brown eggs.

Carson House Farm

A fresh batch of lamb products has arrived. We will have ground lamb (it goes quickly!), lamb chops (fantastic on the grill), boneless leg roasts, and more. As always, our lamb is grass-fed and all natural.

Mullet Apiaries
Spring is in bloom! The succession of blossoms changes from week to week giving all the pollinators reason to get out there and work. This week we noticed the wild black raspberries are beginning to bud, the May Apple flowers have unfolded, as have the wild geranium and cinquefoil. The honeybees are busy gathering pollen and nectar from many sources. Be sure to taste the fruits of their labor in Mullet Apiaries honey and creamed honey. You can use it in place of sugar in those cool summer drinks we will all soon be sipping!

Wholesome Valley Farm

We are sending down some freshly ground grains this week including cornmeal, spelt and wheat. They also have past-date milk available at half off which are still perfectly suitable for baking and cooking.

Windy Hill Berry Farm & Vineyard

The fancy mixed salad greens are finally ready, thanks to our new Hoop House. Try them in this salad recipe from Walnut Creek Cheese. Also our English Muffins will be back this week. Try them toasted with some of our Remembrance, Rosemary Grape jelly. We will be bringing flats of 30 eggs for $4, laid by our new pullet (young) hens, two of which equal one large egg.  Are you in the mood for egg salad? Before you boil the eggs add a small amount of salt to the water to toughen the shell. Another trick is to add two teaspoons of white vinegar to the water, which may also prevent cracking. The vinegar tends to soften the shell allowing the interior more room for expansion. Immediately cool the eggs in ice water then peel them before storing in the refrigerator. Enjoy the nice weather this weekend; plan a picnic!

Thanks so much for your support!
