Raymond L. Worthington

CONESVILLE – Raymond L. Worthington, 78, of Conesville, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.

Ray was born on August 24, 1939 in Coshocton to the late Emma Lucile Bell Worthington and William Edgar Worthington.  Ray achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on May 2, 1955.  He attended Conesville High School, graduating in 1957.  Ray married his high school sweetheart, Zoe Ann Norris, on October 24, 1959.  He served in the Army National Guard, 37th Recon Company of the Ohio 37th Infantry Division from 1957-1963.

Ray worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, Carnation Milk, Universal Cyclops, and retired from Armco Steel of Coshocton as Supervisor of Conversion after 38 years.

Ray volunteered as a F.C.V. Fireman beginning in 1966, and served as Chief from 1985 until 2010.  He was active in the County Chief’s Association, County Firefighters Association, Coshocton County Local Emergency Planning Committee, and served as Armco Plant Fire Chief until his retirement.  Ray especially enjoyed mentoring young volunteer firemen.

Ray was a lifetime member of the Conesville United Methodist Church.   He served as a youth fellowship leader and various committees throughout his life, and most recently enjoyed delivering the children’s message.

In 2006, Ray was named the Conesville Volunteer of the Year and in 2017, he was recognized as the First Responder of the Year for Coshocton County.

Ray treasured spending time with his family and friends.  He also enjoyed woodworking and fishing, especially his numerous fishing trips to Canada.

Ray is survived by his devoted wife, Zoe A. Worthington; son, Eric (Susan) Worthington of Conesville; daughter, Amy (Todd) Brown of Coshocton; grandchildren Benjamin (Hannah Ulman) Worthington, Katie (Trevor) Rhodes, Marcus (Kathleen Atanasoff) Brown Elgart, and Luke Brown; sister Edna McIntosh of Coshocton.

Along with his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his grandson, Derek Brown Elgart; son-in-law Leonard Elgart; and brother-in-law James McIntosh.

Friends may call at The Miller Funeral Home, 639 Main St., Coshocton, Ohio on Sunday January 28, 2018 from 3:00 PM -5:00 PM and one hour prior to the services on Monday.  A Celebration of Life service for Ray will be held at the funeral home Monday at 11:00 AM with Pastors Karen and Phillip Gibson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be directed to Conesville United Methodist Church, F.C.V Fire Department or Community Hospice of Coshocton.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
