Roger William Ames

Roger William Ames, 89, of Berlin, Ohio, formerly of Coshocton County, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at his home, in (Berlin) Millersburg, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2022, at the Free Funeral Home with Pastor James Butler of Amazing Grace Baptist Temple in Millersburg, Ohio officiating. A meal will follow at United Dayspring Mennonite Church, 5641 TR 362, Millersburg. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Private burial will be at the Shepler Church. Arrangements are by the Free Funeral Home in Coshocton, Ohio.

Roger William Ames was born in Millcreek Township to Ralph and Opal (Bickel) Ames on March 28, 1933. He graduated from Keene in 1951. He married Jean Helen Hothem on June 20, 1953, at the Chili Crossroads Bible Church. Roger attended Cleveland Bible College (Malone University), Cedarville Bible College (Cedarville University), Ashland College (Ashland University) and received a master’s degree in education from Kent State University. He worked for the White Motor Company in Cleveland, Ohio; Orville Body in Orville, Ohio; General Electric in Coshocton, Ohio; Beneficial Finance, Ward Lanning Trucking Company of Coshocton, prior to working as school bus driver, coach, teacher and administrator for the Ridgewood Local Schools. Following his tenure at Ridgewood, he was employed by the Coshocton County Schools system as a school supervisor before becoming the Superintendent of Coshocton County Schools and Superintendent of the Coshocton County Joint Vocational School. He was an active farmer until retiring from the farm in 2019 and loved his beloved herd of prize-winning llamas that he raised for many years. Roger was a strong Christian who faithfully served his church throughout his life. He was involved in the Ohio River Valley Llama Association (ORVLA), Alpaca Llama Show Association (ALSA), Coshocton County Retired Teacher Association, Keene Alumni, Coshocton County Farm Bureau, past President of the Coshocton County Republican Central Committee, and past member of Chili Crossroads and Calvary Baptist Church of Coshocton and most recently a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Temple in Millersburg, Ohio.

Roger had a love for nature, flowers, animals and the beautification of his property and flower gardens. Roger enjoyed farming, John Deere Tractors, traveling, attending gospel concerts/music, and getting together with friends, family as no one was a stranger to him. Roger and Jean truly enjoyed and appreciated the Hawk’s Landing Community during their brief residency. They especially enjoyed meeting regularly with past members of the rural Farm Bureau Council that he and Jean actively participated in for many years with many friends he and Jean graduated with from Keene High School.

Roger William Ames is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Opal Ames and wife, Jean Ames.

Roger William Ames is survived by his beloved four-legged companion Bandit; son, Harold Owen Ames and wife, Debbie (Brown) of Cambridge, Ohio; son, Mark Roger Ames and wife, Julie (McComas) of Hilliard, Ohio; brothers, Tommy Ames of Millersburg, Ohio, Donald Ames and wife, Kathy of Marietta, Ohio; sisters; Linda Brenly and husband, Gary Brenly of Fresno, Ohio, and Darlene Bechtol and husband, George of Millersburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Dr. Ashlee Ames and husband, Mike Poulter of Springboro, Ohio, Amber Beretich of Grandview, Ohio, Justin Ames and wife, Samantha of Byesville, Ohio, Julianne Bump and husband, Ryan of Portage, Michigan; and great-grandchildren, Emmalee and Matthew Poulter, Jadeyn, Jordyn, and Jaycee Ames, and Sophia, Lucy, Annalise, and Evelyn Bump.

Memorial contributions may be given to Cedarville University, Pensacola Christian College, Calvary Baptist Church of Coshocton, Amazing Grace Baptist Temple of Millersburg or a charity of your choice.
