RVHS baseball holding fundraiser

WARSAW – Come enjoy an evening of good music and food hosted by the River View High School Baseball team.

A chicken dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. and Carson Drive, featuring two River View graduates, will perform country classic rock at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in the auditorium at the school.

“We are doing this event as our major fundraiser for the year,” said Coach Jesse Smoulder. “We just had to order new windscreen for our outfield fence, which was a $4,000 expense. Plus, we use our money for the general upkeep of the field, for uniforms, and for needed baseball supplies. We try to spend our money on things that will benefit our current players, but our younger programs use our fields and facility free of charge, so they benefit from it as well.”

The team is taking an active role in the fundraiser by selling tickets for it, working as ushers for the concert, helping to clean tables and filling a variety of other roles.

“They all want nice things, so I hope they learn that they need to be motivated and work hard to earn those things,” Smoulder said. “I also hope they realize that people are gracious with their money and will support local causes. I want them to be humble and appreciative, but I also want them to remember this so they will give back when they are older.”

Another part of the fundraiser is a silent auction that includes many donated items from area businesses plus tickets to a variety of attracts and some from the Cincinnati Reds and Akron Rubber Ducks.

“The community support is tremendous,” Smoulder said. “It’s been tough economically in our area, yet our local businesses continue to sacrifice for the students and athletes in our area. As a teacher and coach in this community, I cannot express enough the gratitude I have and our players have for the community’s willingness to support us and the other local schools.”

He also is very appreciative of Carson Drive.

“Jay Dotson, a member of the band, approached us,” Smoulder said. “He attended River View and so did Patrick Winegar, another member of the band. They wanted to give back to our school. They have a great following in our area, are very talented, and we are excited to have them.”

Concert admission is $10 and the concert – dinner combo is $17. Tickets are available from any player or by calling 740-202-2890 or 740-824-3522 (RVHS).
