WWI book discussion planned for museum

| January 26, 2017

COSHOCTON – The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is hosting a book discussion on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 5p.m. about the historical fiction novel, “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway. “A Farewell to Arms” takes place in Italy during WWI. In the midst of death and destruction the main character becomes involved in a passionate relationship with a nurse. The intensity and hopefulness of the romance never overshadows the horrific war. The novel speaks to post-war America within the philosophic movement Modernism which was born from the tragic events of World War I. Those who lived through the war could not return to a 19th c. world view – the millions of casualties and the scope of the war’s destruction forever changed people’s assumptions. Hemingway, like other modernists, sought to make something new out of the brokenness, to find something new which could help the world to heal.

The program is free but reservations are required. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located at 300 N. Whitewoman St. in Historic Roscoe Village. The museum is open to the public Friday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For information, contact JHM at 740-622-8710, e-mail jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org or visit www.jhmuseum.org. The Ohio Arts Council also helped fund this event with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
