The loss of Billy Graham has been felt around the world. Graham will most certainly be remembered as the greatest evangelist of modern times. He touched millions of lives and led countless numbers of people to Christ. His influence on world leaders, many U.S. President’s and ordinary men and women will go down in history as monumental. Thankfully, he and his wife Ruth instilled that same spirit of compassion, faith and giving in their children.

The United States finished fourth overall in the 2018 winter Olympics medal count with nine gold medals, eight silver medals and six bronze medals. With little surprise Norway finished first with 39 total medals. Key medals for the Americans included the women’s gold medal win in hockey and the surprising and dramatic first ever gold medal win in men’s curling. And how about those pants the curling Norwegians wore? Prediction – those will be a hot item in Norway. Regardless of the medal count it is very possible that the frigid relations between North and South Korea may have melted just a tad thanks to the Olympics.

In the spirit of true sportsmanship and humility Iowa Hawkeye sophomore point guard Jordan Bohannon missed a free throw on purpose in a game against Northwestern that, if made, would have given him the all-time Iowa record for consecutive free throws made at 35. He is now tied with Iowa legend Chris Street, who was killed in a car crash in 1993 with the record standing at 34 consecutive free throws made.

River View High School senior swimmer Caleb Fischer proved that a lot of hard work, dedication and effort pays off as he finished 14th in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1.00.14 at the Division II state swimming tournament held in Canton this past weekend. Fischer made the finals by placing 15th in the preliminaries with a time of 1.00.09. Congratulations to Caleb, his family, coaches and the school for the support he has received over the years. A great accomplishment and well deserved.

What should the Trump administration do about the Russian meddling in last year’s election? Something should be done, especially since it seems apparent that the meddling was fully condoned by Putin.

As we head into March (finally!) be prepared for dandelions, green grass, and the time change – remember to “Spring Forward” on Saturday night, March 10! Then it’s almost time for the Chamber of Commerce auction with lots of goodies donated by local businesses and organizations. Watch The Beacon for more details.

The college basketball scandal is far reaching and before it is over, it is highly possible that some notable names will be gone from the sport. The NCAA needs to get its act together and put stronger enforcements in place.

The Cleveland Indians are in sixth place in the odds to win the World Series. Ahead of them are the Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, Cubs and Nationals. For local Pirate and Reds fans, you may have a long season. But that’s why they play 162 games.
