Sylvester Young

Sylvester Young, 73, Newcomerstown, formerly of Massillon, passed away on Sunday, March 3, in the SelectSpecialtyHospital, Akron, following a short illness.

Sylvester was born in Inverness, Mississippi, Sunflower County, on January 29, 1940, and was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Young, Sr. and Geneva Hollins Young.

He was a graduate of McNierHigh School, Belzoni, Mississippi, Humphreys County, class of 1958. He was employed as a truck driver with Tastee Apple, Newcomerstown, for many years. Prior to that he was a driver for Yellow Bus Sales, Coshocton County, and D J M Trucking, Cleveland. For a few years, he was an assembler with 31, Inc., Newcomerstown, and was also employed in the gas well inspection business with Stocker & Sitler, Gnadenhutten. Sylvester enjoyed fishing, cooking, working on cars, and collecting fishing poles. He was a member of the former St. Paul’s A. M. E. Church, Newcomerstown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Precious Lane, Indianola, Miss., and Margaret Simpson, Detroit, two brothers, Alonzo Young, Detroit, and Richard Spells, Massillon, and his mother-in-law, Willie Belle Harris, Newcomerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Harris Young, Newcomerstown, whom he married on May 4, 1970. Sylvester also leaves three sons and two daughters: Albert and wife Violet Harris, Dover, Steve and wife Mellissa Harris, Dennison, Sylvester and wife Daylene Young, Jr., New Philadelphia, Dimittra Harris, Newcomerstown, and Geneva Harris, also Newcomerstown. There are also 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Sylvester is also survived by several brothers and sisters: Johnnie Mack and wife Ruth Robinson, Indianola, Miss., Reaver Young, Detroit, Willie Lee and wife Ladonne) Young, Detroit, Arthur Lee Young, Brandon, Miss., Jimmy Byars, Belzoni, Miss., Roosevelt and wife Laura Spells, Canton, Albert and wife Rozella Spells, Canton, George Spells, Canton, Inez Young Williams, Belzoni, Miss., Ollie Jolly, Gulfport, Miss., Ethel Copeland, Massillon, and Shellarella  Nealy, Albany, Georgia. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Zester Young, Detroit, an aunt, Savannah Young, Clarksdale, Miss., and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services to celebrate Sylvester’s life will be held on Friday, March 8, 1:00 PM, in the Ourant Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Sherrell will conduct the services. Visiting hours will also be held on Friday, beginning at 11:00 AM until the 1:00 PM funeral. Burial will follow at WestLawnCemetery, Newcomerstown, at a later date.
