Bean dinner to be pick up only

| August 7, 2020
The 153rd annual G.A.R. Bean Dinner will take place on the customary third Sunday in August at McElwee Park in New Castle. This year a new format will be pick up only on Sunday, Aug. 16 because of COVID-19.
The bean dinner will be held drive-thru style. Food will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu includes soup beans cooked over an open fire in iron kettles, cornbread, potato salad, shredded chicken or hotdog sandwiches, pie and bottled water. Boxed price will be $10 per meal which includes soup beans, cornbread, potato salad, sandwich, pie and drink.
The Grand Army of the Republic Bean Dinner is held annually in commemoration of the Charles C. Nichols Post, formed in 1867. Historically, the bean dinner was held on the Nicholas Farm west of New Castle. On bequeathal of McElwee Park to the community more than 100 years ago, the commemoration was transferred to its present location.
“It is very important, and we hope you will come and support our park,” said Karen and Allen Locke, who help organize the event. “We also donate to the emergency veterans fund and contributions will be greatly appreciated and are used for park upkeep and improvements. Come pickup food and remember and our veterans.”
