The Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department held a chicken barbecue on June 18. There was also a dead weight tractor pull that was hosted by the Bakersville, Ohio, Tractor Pullers Association.

Chris Everhart, part of the pulling committee for the park, said about 38 tractors had entered the pull so far. The committee usually holds two tractor pulls, one in June and one for the homecoming celebration in August.

Gerald Hothem, a retired firefighter, was one of the men responsible for cooking 800 chicken halves. He said he thought the fire department has been doing the chicken barbecue fundraiser since the early 70s. “We started setting up and getting the chicken started about 10 a.m. and we’ll be done around 3 p.m.”  Serving for the dinner started at 4 p.m. and the meal included chicken, potato salad and applesauce.

Cameron Mizer is the president of the Bakersville Fire Department. “All of the money we get from this will go back into our general fund to pay bills and buy equipment.” The department is all volunteer with about 12 active firemen. Mizer said they could use more volunteers. “They should live in or really close to Adams Township and will need to take a 36 hour training course. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer fire person should contact Chief John Ridenour.
