Local man places second in world karate competition
COSHOCTON – Jon McFarland recently competed in the World Karate Championship in Italy where he placed second in his division against 11 other competitors from around the world.“It feels pretty good, especially to represent Team U.S.A.,” said McFarland.
McFarland’s journey to the top started when he qualified for regionals in Toledo where he was awarded first place. From there, he traveled to Nationals in Detroit where he again placed first. He and the other top three were qualified to go to Italy to compete for the world title.
He first became interested in karate when he was 14 years old and began competing in 1991. He has competed in and won tournaments in California, Florida, and New York.
During the World Karate Championship, McFarland met former world champions from Team U.S.A. who offered to help him train for the 2014 World Karate Championship in Ireland.
“If anyone can get me ready for it, they can,” he said.
McFarland would like to thank all of his sponsors for making his trip to Italy possible: Tim Shrimplin, Dr. Jeremy Portman, Greg and Donna Cavdill, Advanced Spinal Care and Rehab, Jane Prater, Judy Kaser, and Mike Gray. He would also like to thank his wife, Michele.
