COSHOCTON – Members of the Coshocton Canal Quilters celebrated National Quilting Day and Month by using their talents to create quilts for two different community projects.

National Quilting Day was actually March 18, but it wasn’t until March 25 that about 18 members of the group were able to gather together at Roscoe United Methodist Church to work on “I Spy” quilts and patriotic ones for area veterans.

“We try to give them (the ‘I Spy’ quilts) to children who went through domestic violence situations, are involved with children services or have cancer,” said Patsy Cruxton, president of the group. “We’ve gotten quite a few tops for them done today.”

Mary Lampe said they also have done community quilt projects for people going through kidney dialysis and for oncology patients at the hospital.

“We enjoy getting together and working on these for the fellowship and because we know they are good projects,” Cruxton said. “The ‘I Spy’ quilts give kids something to think about and the backing is soft and comfortable and they can cuddle up to it.”

The quilters worked on their projects from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and members of the group floated in and out as they had time to dedicate to the projects. Some who couldn’t participate donated fabric squares to help.

“We brought in squares for the ‘I Spy’ quilts,” Lampe said. “Everyone was asked to bring four and by the time we traded with each other you had 30 fabrics.”

Cruxton explained that quilts are made out of three pieces – the top, batting and backing where blankets are only one layer. The layers are either quilted together by machine or knotted together.

“It’s up to the individual,” Lampe said.

The Coshocton Canal Quilters also celebrated the month with displays at the Coshocton Public Library and at McDonalds and are busy planning their 30th anniversary quilt show. The show will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11-13, at the Coshocton County Career Center and the theme is “Quilting Creatively – One Shape at a Time.”

“It will all be on one floor this year, with air conditioning and plenty of parking,” Cruxton said. “It’s going to be much more comfortable for everyone to enjoy the show.”

She and Lampe believe they finished about 12 ‘I Spy’ quilts and had three veteran quilts worked on during their March 25 sewing day.

“I think everyone feels good knowing we are going to find good homes for their quilts,” Lampe said.
